Connecting Oxford Talent with the Commodities Industry

by Emma Saupin

For typical recruitment businesses, early-career talent is often overlooked. Candidates fresh out of university can be perceived as “too junior” or not worth the initial investment required to develop them.

At Aubay UK, we are adding to our expertise previously honed on mid to senior IT talent and are beginning to highlight the importance of early-career talent, investing in their development and believing in their potential, and challenging the traditional methods of hiring.

By starting this fresh initiative and engaging with talent directly from its source, we’re creating a unique opportunity for the benefit of our clients and talent alike.

Aubay’s Aim

As a new initiative aimed at helping our clients grow their future workforce, we’ve begun partnering with leading universities across the UK. Our process is to identify and nurture the very best in data science and technology.

The 5th May 2026 marked our first collaboration within this initiative, in partnership with the University of Oxford and Mercuria, a global leader in commodities trading, we launched a targeted programme designed to surface top-tier candidates.

Over three months, the Aubay team worked closely with the Oxford Commodities Society and Mercuria to identify, assess and shortlist the top 5 candidates to pitch their potential for the three-month internship role.

We hosted webinars, offered transparent candidate communication and guidance, which culminated into a unique Dragons’ Den-style event held within the University of Oxford.

The Event Begins

Mercuria were seeking a highly analytical and forward-thinking intern to be placed into their AI & Data Science team.

On the day, representatives from Mercuria, Trader, Daniel Sharp and Data Scientist, Elias Finkelstein, were in the boardroom, joined by Aubay’s Account Manager, Eryona Gashi. Each finalist was invited individually into the boardroom to present their skills, background, and, of course, their potential.

Meanwhile, attendees gathered in the conference room where Krish Rana and Luka MacInnes-Bouffard, Founders of the Oxford Commodities Society, spoke on the story, purpose and future of the society. We were enthused by the number of students and Oxford Commodities Society members in attendance, and we are continuously impressed by the commitment we see in such young talent.

Aubay provided insights and practical advice, from how candidates stand out in recruitment processes, to industry-specific guidance and a deeper understanding of careers within commodities trading, financial services and fintech, sectors in which Aubay has over a decade of experience.

Before long, the decision was made...

Result

After 542 applicants, 35 shortlisted, 9 video entries, 7 presentations submitted, 5 pitchers, and a short but considered deliberation, the judges selected Zhaoxing (Jason) Hu as the successful candidate.

Jason, a final-year Mathematics student at the University of Oxford, combines a passion for board games and sport with a strong drive to challenge himself in the field of data science. He particularly impressed the panel with his ability to deliver practical, hands-on projects and clearly demonstrate their real-world application.

The standard across all five candidates was exceptionally high. Their dedication and preparation were evident throughout, and it was clear that each of them is on a path towards a bright and promising future.

Upon Reflection

This event marks the beginning of a broader initiative for Aubay UK. By working directly with universities like Queen’s University Belfast, UCL and their student societies, we are redefining how early-career talent is identified, assessed and introduced to industry.

The success of this collaboration demonstrates the value of looking beyond traditional recruitment pipelines. High-potential candidates are already out there, ready to contribute. It is simply a matter of finding the right way to engage them.

Looking ahead, Aubay aims to expand this programme across more universities and sectors, tapping into our network at Level39, helping organisations access talent earlier and more effectively.

If your business is looking to build a future-ready workforce and tap into emerging talent pools, reach out to our team to begin a collaboration!
